Spring 2024 Workshop on IEEE LEO SatS and Space Environment

Spring 2024 Workshop on IEEE LEO SatS and Space Environment

Following a presentation on Climate Change by a group of Young Professionals, the audience inquired about “space junk” produced by satellites, and expressed concern that this topic has not been adequately addressed.

This workshop covered topics to demonstrate what IEEE is doing to understand the carbon footprint of satellites, their manufacturing impact on the environment, etc.

Fall 2023 Workshop on “LEO Ground Stations and Ground Station Services”

Fall 2023 WorkshopFor the operations of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, ground stations are essential. During this workshop, we provided different perspectives on ground station infrastructures and operational services. This included the traditional way done by agencies, low-budget approaches driven by academia, new GEO-relay services for almost 24/7 access to LEO satellites, as well as massive data throughput solutions through optical links.

This talk covered the design and operations of legacy institutional ground facilities, with a focus on ground stations, their characteristics and operational aspects. We tried to show the differences for other uses and commercial providers as well as to the New Space approaches. In the second part of the talk, we presented the space communication relevant standardization organizations and showed some examples of standards produced and used. We discussed advantages and possible use in wider scope outside of national agencies.
